It shouldn't matter if you iptables LOG directive is going to a file or syslog (or syslog could be the problem, and not redirecting to /var/log/messages.
How do you log in from another machine (telnet, ssh?) I wonder is /dev/console is symlinked to a pty? But probably not. Check /etc/syslog.conf look for /dev/console in there. For more info, check tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html. Look under Remote-Serial-Console and Text-Terminall-HOWT-9.html#console. My guess is if you fix iptables logging, or sysconf redirection, you will solve it.
