I bleive this is a pretty standard port 25 connection probe, then disconnect. No email need be gernated or attempted. Like if you: telnet $mailhost 25 then disconnect, you would see a message similar to your below, in the mail servers logs. Some network probes like the Open Source monitor Big Brother do this as a standard service check. It could be your ISP probing to see if customers are hosting mail. Or as you elude, it could be a spammer gathering a list of mail servers, to later test for relay. You can lookup up the owner of the IP, to possibly help determine intent. Hope that helps.
