I just learned how to split in bash so that the script can split on "@":

$ echo '[EMAIL PROTECTED]://www.abc.net.au/rn/podcast/feeds/ mind.xml' |
  while IFS="@" read datadir podcastURL ; do
    echo "$datadir : $podcastURL"
  done
all_in_the_mind : http://www.abc.net.au/rn/podcast/feeds/mind.xml

IFS appears to act as a character class, similar to this regular expression: /[$IFS]+/
