I thought I would put together a list of apps that I believe have low memory conumption for the Linux desktops, that will be used by ByteWorks.
I would use the Icewm as you suggested before. Here is part of my ~/.icewm/ directory. It will show you how to add in the applications. Also here is a tutorial on how to set up the ~/.icewm/menu http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=7774&page=3 The beginning of the entire tutorial is here: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=7774&page=1 http://www.icewm.org/manual/icewm-8.html For the Menu, I have this in ~/.icewm (this is ~/.icewm/menu): # This is an example for IceWM's menu definition file. # # Place your variants in /etc/icewm or in $HOME/.icewm # since modifications to this file will be discarded when you # (re)install icewm. # prog xterm xterm xterm prog Gimp gimp gimp separator menu Applications folder { menu Editors folder { prog vi vi xterm -e vi prog mg mg xterm -e mg prog Gnumeric gnumeric gnumeric prog emacs emacs emacs prog Ted Ted Ted prog Lyx emacs lyx } menu "WWW Browsers" folder { prog Firefox firefox firefox prog Links links xterm -e links -g prog Irssi irssi xterm -e irssi -c irc.freenode.net -n rwcitek -w $ROBERTS_IRC_PASSWD -h linux.cwelug.org } menu "Mail and News" folder { prog Pine pine xterm -e pine prog Thunderbird thunderbird thunderbird } menu Graphics folder { prog Gimp gimp gimp prog Qcad qcad qcad prog XPaint xpaint xpaint prog XFig xfig xfig } menu Multimedia folder { prog XPlayCD xplaycd xplaycd prog Aumix mixer aumix prog XMMS xmms xmms } menu Science folder { prog Octave octave xterm -e octave prog Gnuplot gnuplot xterm -e gnuplot } menu Devel folder { prog ddd ddd ddd prog Idle idle idle } prog Xpdf xpdf xpdf prog "DVI Previewer" xdvi xdvi prog "Ghostview" ghostview gv prog "Rox" rox rox } menu Games folder { prog XGalaga xgalaga xgal prog XDemineur xdemineur xdemineur } menu System folder { prog top top xterm -e top prog xload xload xload prog xosview xosview xosview } menu Utilities folder { prog Xman xman xman prog "Font Selector" xfontsel xfontsel prog Clock xclock xclock prog Magnify xmag xmag prog Calculator xcalc xcalc prog Colormap xcolormap xcmap prog Clipboard xclip xclipboard prog xkill bomb xkill separator prog "Screen Saver" xlock xlock -nolock prog "Screen Lock" xlock xlock } menu "Window Managers" folder { restart icewm - icewm restart wmaker - wmaker restart enlightenment - enlightenment restart blackbox - blackbox restart fvwm2 - fvwm2 restart fvwm - fvwm restart wm2 - wm2 } For the IceWm toolbar (`/.icewm/toolbar): # This is an example for IceWM's toolbar definition file. # # Place your variants in /etc/icewm or in $HOME/.icewm # since modifications to this file will be discarded when you # (re)install icewm. # prog XTerm xterm xterm prog Thunderbird thunderbird thunderbird prog Firefox firefox firefox I would include the following programs: Category Office apps ------------------------------- Gnumeric spreadsheet: Very stable, imports almost all Microsoft *.xls. Very similar to Excel minus the annoying bugs. IMHO the gnumeric people have done shown a gret deal of attention to detail. Ted-2.17 word processor: It can save to rtf, pdf, ps, txt and html). The compiled binary is only 3 MB. It can accept many different types of images. Xpdf: This is a good pdf viewer gv: ghostview (you may want to omit Xpdf and use this only as it can render pdf as well as psotscript. Category Audio: ------------------------------- Xaumix/Aumix: Audio mixer and volume control mpg123: Command line mp3 player. Workman CD player Category Web: ------------------------------- Firefox: It is a large program but is a good browser Irssi: Comand line IRC client. Category Mail: ------------------------------- Thunderbird MUA Category File Manager: ------------------------------- Rox-filer see http://www.skepticats.com/rox/ "The Joy of Rox" -- Kind regards, Jonathan _______________________________________________ CWE-LUG mailing list [email protected] http://www.cwelug.org/ http://www.cwelug.org/archives/ http://www.cwelug.org/mailinglist/
