I thought I would put together a list of apps that I believe have low
memory conumption for the Linux desktops, that will be used by
ByteWorks.

I would use the Icewm as you suggested before. Here is part of my
~/.icewm/ directory. It will show you how to add in the applications.
Also here is a tutorial on how to set up the ~/.icewm/menu
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=7774&page=3

The beginning of the entire tutorial is here:

For the Menu, I have this in ~/.icewm (this is ~/.icewm/menu):
# This is an example for IceWM's menu definition file.
#
# Place your variants in /etc/icewm or in $HOME/.icewm
# since modifications to this file will be discarded when you
# (re)install icewm.

For the IceWm toolbar (`/.icewm/toolbar):
# This is an example for IceWM's toolbar definition file.
#
# Place your variants in /etc/icewm or in $HOME/.icewm
# since modifications to this file will be discarded when you
# (re)install icewm.
#
prog XTerm xterm xterm
prog Thunderbird thunderbird thunderbird
prog Firefox firefox firefox

I would include the following programs:

Category Office apps
-------------------------------
Gnumeric spreadsheet: Very stable, imports almost all Microsoft *.xls.
Very similar to Excel minus the annoying bugs. IMHO the gnumeric
people have done shown a gret deal of attention to detail.

Ted-2.17 word processor: It can save to rtf, pdf, ps, txt and html).
The compiled binary is only 3 MB. It can accept many different types
of images.

Xpdf: This is a good pdf viewer
gv: ghostview (you may want to omit Xpdf and use this only as it can
render pdf as well as psotscript.

Category Audio:
-------------------------------
Xaumix/Aumix: Audio mixer and volume control
mpg123: Command line mp3 player.
Workman CD player

Category Web:
-------------------------------
Firefox: It is a large program but is a good browser
Irssi: Comand line IRC client.

Category Mail:
-------------------------------
Thunderbird MUA

Category File Manager:
-------------------------------
