I think the problem is the domain name of the forwarded address.  If  
I use "@alum.calberkeley.org" then forwarding is disabled.  If I use  
"@cal.berkeley.edu" it works just fine.  I suspect that the  
@alum.calberkeley.org is denying gmail or bouncing or something.

So, I mistyped when I wrote this:

That should say "... deleting and then retyping in the same address  
doesn't make a difference."
