Is there a way to change video settings within grub?

On this one machine if I boot with grub the boot screen is scrambled
to the point where I can't read anything. If I wait or press enter,
Linux boots, changes the video, and all's well. If I boot the
machine with Knoppix which uses isolinux, the boot screen is fine.

I've looked at the grub manual[1] and see testvbe and vbeprobe.
testvbe tests the mode and vbeprobe queries information about the
mode, but no command seems to provide information about the current
mode or change the mode. For example, how can I have grub boot with
vbe mode 0x12e?
