Hello all,

The CWELUG held its monthly meeting at ByteWorks yesterday and Dan
Adelman came by to show us community wireless using Less Network Hotspot
Server (LNHS)[1]. Turns out that it doesn't require much to get one
going[2]:

- Processor: 133MHz Pentium
- RAM: 64 Mb
- Hard Drive: 1 Gb
- Networking: 2 NIC cards
- CD-ROM: required

And the CD-ROM is only required for installation.

I was able to install and simulate a community network using VMWare.
The install takes up only 250 MB and seems to run just fine in 32 MB of
RAM (I was able to get it to run in as little as 12 MB). My VMWare
settings for machine Hotspot (install of LNHS):

- RAM : 32 MB
- HDD : 2 GB
- Ethernet1 : NAT
- Ethernet2 : /dev/vmnet0

VMWare settings for 3 client machines (simulation of nodes on the network):

- Ethernet1: /dev/vmnet0

When I used the client machines to get to the Internet, I was greeted
with a logon to Less Networks.

If we want to build a real prototype network, what's next?

- find 2 low-end machines with 16+ MB RAM that work
- find 2 wifi connections (simple WAPs or wifi pci cards).
- install two 10bT NICs in each (or one NIC and one wifi card)
- install one small drive (1 to 3.5 GB) in each
- install LNHS on each

Anything else?
