That the commenters don't believe you is to be expected. They don't really care about the security issues. They just want pictures, as though one couldn't get enough of that on the 'net already. One commenter did bring up a good point. Although you mention wiping the drive, you didn't explain how. You could have pointed them to Darik's Boot And Nuke[1], or shred or wipe from within Knoppix. It would have been a great way to pitch the "Hacking Knoppix" book. You could also have advised them to seek out a place that provides such a service. For example, at ByteWorks we use both DBAN and shred for exactly the reasons you mention in the article: we don't want to be liable for spreading people's private information. We even have a nascent wiki page on wiping[2].
