You can use apt-get, but all you should have to do is run the normal update tool. You should have gotten an updated packages alert when you logged in. Ruby 1.8.4 is in the latest update. I think you still need to compile 1.8.5 from source, which was what I was trying to avoid. You can also use JRuby.
