Robert:

I'm not surprised by such a vague and wide ranging statement.

Granted I know nothing of freecycle and it's members or admins, but it
sounds like the admins or list owners are trying to cover themselves it
terms of legal liability. It also sounds like they don't really
understand what they are trying to protect themselves from. Software
piracy, OK, I understand. With regard to legitimate FOSS distribution,
it doesn't make sense, of course.

It sounds like a knee jerk reaction to something they aren't fully
educated about.

That's a quick and fairly narrow assessment and only in terms of FOSS.

Other proprietary software and pirated music... all bets are off.

Cheers

E!

on-line exchange for reusing unwanted goods. Is it worthwhile to
respond to the blanket statement from the admins that software cannot
be copied and redistributed? If so, what do folks think is an
appropriate way to respond?

> Software and other forms of media fall under Copyright agreements. This
message serves to clarify this group's stance on the distribution of
software, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, recorded music, taped media and other
printed materials via Freecycle(TM).

> Software -- The software being exchanged:
> 1. Has to be the original software, not a copy.

> 4. Must follow the terms in its End User License Agreement (EULA) - If
the EULA makes no mention about transfers or exchanges, treat the
software like you would any other work protected by copyright (like a
book, CD, or video).
