Odd puzzle for everyone. Sorry if it's a bit rambling because I typed all below as I was working through the problem.
I'm experiencing a weird oddity using Firefox 3.0.4 and IE 7 on Windows XP. When I go to Google or Yahoo and do a search, it often hangs. If anything shows up in the status bar, it's this: Transferring data from 1.2.3.0... But when it does work, I get other oddities. For example, I am creating a list of sources to give to students to help them write a thesis statement. So I did a search in Google using the following phrase: writing a thesis statement The first link is titled: Creating a Thesis Statement -- The OWL at Purdue But the link for that page is to www.anticipatesavings.com I've been to that Purdue site before and know for sure that that is the absolute wrong URL. It should show this: owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/545/01/ So I test this in IE 7. Open Google, type in same phrase, and I get the exact same search result with the wrong link below the listing. When and if Yahoo works and it doesn't hang, I get the same error on both Firefox and IE. I've got Google Chrome on this computer and I test the same search phrase in both Google and Yahoo and both return the same site but this time with the correct link to the Purdue site. I launched a clean profile of Firefox and tested it there, but I got the error link, that is, the link to anticipatesavings.com. I tested Opera 9.62 and I got the same error in Google and Yahoo. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy, but it didn't find any problems. I'll run antivirus in a bit. On a separate machine, running Vista, I tested the same search string on Firefox 3.0.1 on Google and Yahoo, and I got the correct Purdue link. I upgraded Firefox on same machine to 3.0.4 and I got the correct Purdue link. I installed Google Chrome on the Vista machine and then repeated the searches in Firefox, Chrome, and IE and I got the correct Purdue link. What's going on? I uploaded two screen shots to the Google Group (firefoxChrome.gif and firefoxGoogle.gif). They each show the difference. Notice the URL beneath the top search result. If you have a good eye, you will also notice that I'm signed into Google on the Chrome browser and not signed into Google on Firefox. I can sign into Google on Firefox, but when I do a search, then it hangs and I get the initial error: Transferring data from 1.2.3.0... So this seems to be a problem with this particular machine. And since it's repeatable in Firefox, IE, and Opera using both Google and Yahoo on all three browsers, but it is not repeatable on Google Chrome whether I'm signed into Google or not (just tested that), what could the problem be? It's got to be some kind of DNS thing. I'm thinking the hang is related somehow, but if it is, why isn't Chrome affected? This is mind-boggling. Thanks for any insight. I'm leaving this computer in an hour and won't be back on it till tomorrow afternoon. But I'll test anything if anyone has an good ideas to test.
