I am using VMware. In looking at the specs, Converter only works with Windows:

"Convert Microsoft Windows based physical machines and third party
image formats to VMware virtual machines"

http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

Besides the issue I'm having doesn't seem to be with cloning but
rather with getting the old kernel to recognize the VM's SCSI
controller. I suspect something might have gotten corrupted in the
cloning process.
