Just a note:  Ubuntu users can get rid of piled up old kernels by
using Synaptic to search for "linux-image" -- mark for complete
removal-- and apply removal.  This will get rid of old headers, etc.
Just keep the last two or three kernels in case you manage to really
mess things up.   Saved me over a gig of space cleaning out 2.6.24-16
through -19. And it boots fine. And grub looks all tidy and neat
again.
