I just discovered that one does not need to match the VBox Guest Additions version with the VBox version. That is, even if one is running an earlier version of VBox, one can still install the latest Guest Additions. This is enormously useful as I have several versions of VBox installed across different versions of Ubuntu, Windows, and Mac OS X. This allows me to setup a VM in Ubuntu 7.10 with VBox 1.5.x, give it to friends to test on WinXP with VBox 1.6.6, and eventually deploy on OS X with VBox 2.1.2, or any combination.
