My guess, M$ Windows. When I was in university they had long distance learning courses via satellite, TV and PC (Windows only) so the courseware could be installed your computer. I never took this approach, but I do know the so called courseware consisted in part of an IP address that was obscured by the software itself. In other words, they gave you access the university, but didn't allow you to know what that exact IP was.
