Hi all, a friend of mine in the UK (he's still on Gutsy) complained that
recently Ubuntu's updates started failing, when he checks for updates,
he gets this message:

"Could not download all repository indexes
The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted
because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed
index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your
network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in
the preferences."

A quick check of the index of distro's on Ubuntu's site:

http://www.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/

Shows a history going all the way back to Dapper ... but jumps straight
from Dapper to Hardy!

I did find Gutsy distro's at
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/

Was Gutsy dropped while Dapper was retained because Dapper was a LTS
release (but, 3 years from June 2006 would have been last month, and yet
it's still there)? Or is there some other reason why?

Regardless, I suggested he install the newest version, but I was curious
as to why updates failed, with no warning. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Theresa
