Hi, all, I'm hoping someone has some suggestions to help me find the ghost in the machine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (kernel 2.6.28-15-generic, GNOME 2.26.1) on an Intel Core2 Duo machine with 4GB of RAM. It's been a good, solid machine since I built it.
About a month or so back (no, I don't recall installing anything out of the ordinary) something peculiar started happening. Every night at 23:23, the machine begins to emit a series of beeps in a distinctive pattern. This goes on for one minute, then quits until the next evening. Log files show nothing. I've tried having top running and watching to see if any processes are spawned at the witching hour, but no joy. If the machine is running at all, the beeps happen. Even if I am not logged in. Even if I am logged in but have no applications running. It wouldn't be so bad but, like a lot of people, my computer is in my room, and if I'm sleeping it's like an alarm clock going off (yes, I am often asleep before midnight). Does anyone have any suggestions at all? I would really like to find out what it is -- if I can't I am considering doing a full clean install. It is very annoying!
