Nokia Announces Plan To Start Making Netbooks.

The New York Times
<http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/25/technology/companies/25nokia.html?_r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss>

(8/25, B5, O'Brien) reports, "Nokia, the world's largest maker of mobile
phones, said on Monday that it would make and sell its own netbook computers,
expanding into the fastest-growing segment of the PC market." In the only
details it has revealed, the company said "that the Nokia Booklet 3G would run
Microsoft Windows software and use an Intel Atom processor. The company said it
would have a 10-inch screen and work on third-generation mobile and Wi-Fi
networks." Nokia said it "would provide more details, like when it would begin
selling netbooks and for how much, at an event in Stuttgart next week." The
netbook "market in Western Europe is dominated by two Taiwanese manufacturers,
Acer and Asus, which combine for 49 percent of sales. Samsung of South Korea
and two American computer makers, Hewlett-Packard and Dell, combine to sell 32
percent."

        The AP

(8/25, Svensson) reports, "Nokia said its PC would be 'satisfying a need' among
wireless carriers." AT&T and Verizon Wireless "have started selling netbooks in
their stores, subsidizing the purchase for customers who sign up for wireless
broadband plans." Sprint Nextel Corp. "has started subsidizing netbooks sold at
electronics store Best Buy." Unlike most netbooks, Nokia's "Booklet will have a
built-in GPS navigation chip coupled to Nokia's Ovi Maps software, and an
aluminum cover to contrast with the usual plastic." Nokia has "previously tried
to expand its portfolio beyond cellphones, making a 'tablet' computer that runs
non-Windows software. It hasn't been a mainstream success." The Wall Street
Journal (8/25, B6, Sherwood, Luk) and Reuters (8/25) also report the story.

Unfortunately they are opting form Windows as an OS.
