So the bad news is that this data is gone.  It's not all bad as I was
going to do an upgrade anyways.  And all the important stuff is on
backup drives, at least enough that I can't justify spending the $100+
to recover the data.  Now I have the pleasure of doing an install and
a configuration instead of an upgrade.  :)

BTW, Testdisk and PhotoRec assume that enough of the data is still on
the drive to recover part or all of it.  With a "shred" even the
signatures of a partition or jpeg are reduced to a string of zeros.
