I tried wicd and like its look and feel better, but it still won't connect.
I may have to try something completely different.  Like ndiswrapper and the
drivers for this model as opposed to the fix I found ubuntu forums.  But no,
9.04 didn't work either for them.  I just thought I might be able to get
9.10s nicer look and newer kernel for them.   Now, to find my 9.04 cd.

...or download it again.
