Sorry if this is off-topic, but Amy, in regards to your wi-fi issues, I've discovered two Linux distributions that have excellent wireless card detection.  My wife's 5-year-old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (on which she still insists on using that virus that masquerades as an operating system LOL) has a Broadcom 4311 (or is it 4318? -- I don't remember which) wireless card in it.  I've tried to run various Linux distros on it, and never had any luck getting any of them to recognize and activate drivers for the Broadcom card until this past week.

Mepis and PC/OS (not to be confused with PCLinuxOS) are the only two distros I'm aware of that come with the drivers for the Broadcom card.  Now, anytime I want to use it with Linux, it's no problem at all to do so.  Mepis is based on Debian and features KDE 4.3 for its desktop, while PC/OS is based on Ubuntu and uses Xfce 4.6.1 for its desktop.

My wife's laptop only has 512 MB of RAM in it, and when I tried Mepis, KDE absolutely ground it to a halt soon after getting online.  Besides, I used to be a KDE fan back in its 3.x days, but I've never liked KDE 4 very much at all, so there wasn't any love lost there to begin with.  PC/OS, however, ran like a charm from the live CD (there's also a DVD version that comes with more software pre-installed).  I'd been looking for another distro lately after some issues I had with Mint (long story), and when I found that PC/OS could connect wirelessly from my wife's laptop, plus since I've gone from being a GNOME fan to an Xfce fan as of late, I have to say that PC/OS is now my favorite distro and is honestly the best distro I have ever tried -- I love it!

So Amy, if you're looking for something that will let you connect wirelessly without going through a bunch of trial and error with the command line, I'd highly recommend giving PC/OS a try (or Mepis, if you prefer KDE) -- I think you'll be happy you did. :-)
