Here are some articles on the Google/Verizon deal that's an attempt to
scuttle Net Neutrality for the mobile Internet. Guys, this is BAD.

Google and Verizon propose neutrality rules, exempt wireless
http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/08/09/google.to.sell.out.wireless.for.neutrality.win/
"Google and Verizon this afternoon outlined their widely rumored
proposal for net neutrality guidelines. As expected, the terms would
focus on wired controls but would sacrifice fairness in wireless to
reach the goal... they would give carriers like Verizon free rein to
discriminate against legitimate service that would compete with its
own services."

Key quote: "Google's motivations behind the deal have already been
called into question. The search firm is heavily dependent on Verizon
for Android phone sales and would stand to lose significant market
share and mobile ad revenue if its carrier partner backed away."

Tech Companies, Google Sold You Out
http://gigaom.com/2010/08/09/tech-companies-google-sold-you-out/
"Today’s compromise between Verizon — one of the nation’s largest ISPs
(and largest wireless provider) — and Google on network neutrality is
a big story, not necessarily because it’s going to change the policy
discussion much, but because it marks Google selling out the tech and
startup community so it can advance its own economic interests...
Google gives a little but wins, Verizon gives a little, but wins, and
consumers and innovation ultimately lose."

Key quote: "So Google sold the tech world out as it hopes to keep one
of the largest pushers of its Android operating system happy."

There's Only One Internet
http://www.publicknowledge.org/blog/theres-only-one-internet
"The biggest problem with the framework is that, while purporting to
support “the open Internet,” it draws illogical distinctions on the
basis of what technology you use to access the Internet, and between
“the public Internet” (Verizon’s mantra on the press call) and
“additional online services.” ... The companies seem to want to divide
the Internet yet further—not just between wired and wireless, but
between “the public Internet” and “additional online services.” Thus,
“third party paid prioritization” is allowed—a particular online
service might pay Verizon so that its services and content reach
customers sooner."

(BTW - Public Knowledge is a good group to give $$$ to, in addition to the EFF.)

Google-Verizon plan: Why you should worry
http://www.salon.com/technology/dan_gillmor/2010/08/09/google_verizon_deal
"You should not trust Verizon or other carriers, or Google for that
matter, to follow through in ways that are truly in the interest of
the kind of open networks the nation needs. Throughout the conference
call, we kept hearing references to the "public Internet" -- an
expression that leads inescapably to something else."

Let me just point out, if Apple did this with AT&T, a lot of you guys
would be SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER. I'm hearing a conspicuous silence
over this Google/Verizon deal.

Regardless, this is a very bad deal. I wrote a book about Google, I
use Google's services every day, but I'm going to fight them tooth and
nail on this one. And I expect the rest of you to do the same, if you
care about Net Neutrality.
