There are four possibilities:

1) phone to phone
2) phone to computer
3) computer to phone
4) computer to computer

Skype started with 4 then gradually added 2 and 3, and eventually chat
and video. Google's path seems very similar to Skype's. Google Talk
is 4. Google Chat is 4 with video and IM (and SMS). Google Voice is
a combination of 2 and 3, with the computer acting as an intermediary
between two phones. What Google did yesterday is add 3. All that's
missing for Google to become Skype is 2.

Now if Google could only polish the integration between its services.
