Okay. I learned a lesson here with Unbuntu 10.04. Do not switch from the generic kernel to the PAE kernel without removing all headers and images related to said generic kernel. I have 4 Gigs RAM on my laptop and almost a Gig wasn't being used, so I switched to the PAE kernel.
Recently, I decided to test out the Beta of 10.10 and booted VirtualBox which started, but wouldn't boot 10.10. Something was wrong. Mucho tiempo atras.... I figured out I needed to reinstall VirtualBox, so I downloaded and tried to reinstall. Error messages something about directories and kernel headers. It couldn't figure out which kernel to use. Because I had played around with Ubuntu Tweak, I knew there was a tool to remove old kernels. I didn't realize Tweak could also remove headers. But it did and so I removed the generic headers and the generic kernels which continued to download when I switched to the PAE kernel. Turns out that a sudo apt-get remove virtualbox removed virtualbox. I installed it again from the virtualbox repositories, and viola, accordion, pan flute and guitar; it worked. So don't switch between types of kernels without removing the other type. While the machine may boot either the generic or PAE kernel, at least one kind of software doesn't like and won't work with both kernels installed. -- Central West End Linux Users Group (via Google Groups) Main page: http://www.cwelug.org To post: [email protected] To subscribe: [email protected] To unsubscribe: [email protected] More options: http://groups.google.com/group/cwelug
