I can assume (but don't like to assume) that you're comparing Firefox on the
laptop with Firefox on the desktop?

Strange that a new laptop would have a discontinued OS on it.

Installing Debian should make the two look the same, but having the same
settings should make them the same too.

Personally, I would prefer to install Debian (or maybe Ubuntu, which is a
Debian), but would probably have to set up dual boot so I could use XP when
needed (which is how I set up my Mac).
