As Don mentioned you need to comment out that first line by putting a # in front

This is most likely where you are experiencing issues.  You have no
partitions on your drive.  Technically, you don't need a partition,
but it is rather unusual not to have one.

Yes.  What operating system are you using?  If linux, which distro and
version?   For example, are you using Red Hat 5.1 or Ubuntu 11.04
alpha?  If a desktop version, which desktop environment are you
running, e.g. KDE, Gnome, xfce?

With recent desktop distributions, one should just be able to plug in
an external drive and an icon appears on the desktop.
