Just saw this: The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will support apps for/in Android, BlackBerry, QNX, HTML5, Flash, & Adobe AIR. http://j.mp/fNVzDs
I wrote that this sounded like a mess to me. I had a friend respond that this was a good idea. My response: This is a bad idea for several reasons. For developers, which choice is best? Which one will win? Which one is best for different kinds of apps? Which one will RIM deprecate first, meaning that your hard work is now useless? With iPhones, for example, you have 2 choices: Objective-C or HTML/CSS/JavaScript. Both allow for native appearances, and you can hook into native APIs using both. Much easier for developers. For users, you're going to have apps on your tablet that potentially look and behave in one of SIX different ways! Nothing will be consistent or share the same abilities. And are you going to have to start a special environment to run some of them first, before you can actually run the app? Wouldn't surprise me. This is going to be a total freaking mess to people. It might seem like a good idea at 1st blush, but on thinking about it further, it's obviously a TERRIBLE idea from a company that is floundering in this marketplace. Couple this stupid decision with a string of other stupid decisions, and the BlackBerry Playbook is going to get killed in the marketplace. What do you guys think? Scott -- R.
