TL;DR

Mr. Laden wants a setup where he has emacs and a browser boot up on
start up.  He finds that Ubuntu is a little too much on his small
laptop (I take this to mean a netbook).
He wants no other software on bootup except a wireless connect.

His request is interesting, but so is the second article and the
subsequent back and forth in the comments.
