Try a 10.04 Live CD and see how that works.  I always like to keep relative and friends on LTS versions anyway (that way you only need
to assist with major reinstalls / upgrades every couple of years -- well at least not every 6 months anyway.)

To troubleshoot the existing install do an

lspci

from a terminal and it should reveal the make and model of ethernet and wireless card from which you could perform a web search for
"how to" make them work.
