After looking the problems I was having with Ubuntu and taking into consideration that I've had relatively few problems after switching over to Linux Mint (version 10), I decided to try it out on Dad's desktop. Version 10 worked pretty well, save for not having wifi up and running, and I decided to download version 11. I downloaded both versions--the 32 bit and the 64 bit--and tried out the 64 on my machine. It worked fine, and I decided to install the 64 bit version on Dad's machine. He now has networking fully enabled, both Ethernet and wifi.
