I've failed at the first hurdle with my custom transport -

I don't know how to tell CXF that it exists.
CXF using TransportFactory which bind to the name space to create new transport instance. You can reference the DanD just had mention.

I wanted to start by creating within my project - not in the CXF source tree.
Not sure if I put it in the CXF source tree whether it would automatically get
installed.
If you want to your transport component be loaded by CXF, just need you to register the TransportFactory to the CXF bus as extension. When CXF Bus start up, it will try to load all the bus-extensions.xml in its class path.

I've looked long and hard at the source and can't make it out - the test case for the extension manager didn't give me any clues either. Hopefully somebody can give me a quick and easy answer.
