Would not a solution like that used in Kingmaker (trays for each player on the 
side of the mapboard) also serve?

Just a suggestion, but use owned "Playing Boards" instead. With tiled windows, 
you can distribute cards to the boards quickly, then let each player deal with 
their own thing.
