I have only 3rd ed rules, but I think he may be right.

12.5 When several units attack several defending units
the attacker has the choice of how to divide combat
provided:
12.51 he attacks every defending unit he has moved
adjacent to,
12.52 all his units in enemy ZOC attack some enemy
unit,
12.53 each attacking unit is adjacent to the specific
defending unit it is attacking.

so it seems a combined attack could be OK

then in the Stuka rules

15.3 A Stuka can take part in a battle only if all the
Russian defenders in that battle are within 8 hexes of
the same German Army Group Headquarters counter. The
Stuka attacks by being placed on the defending Russian
units (if more than one stack of Russians are being
attacked together, the Stuka is placed on any of the
defending stacks). No more than one Stuka unit may
trace its range from the same Headquarters unit. On
the first impulse of the game the Stukas may be used
against any Military District in range.
winter.

So a Stuka can definitely effect a multi-hex defenders
