There are differences between Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) under Win98
& Win2K. Win98 only uses the Routed connection method. For a routed
connection, the computer acts as an IP router that forwards packets between
LAN hosts and Internet hosts.

In addition to the Routed connection, Win2K offers the Translated connection
method.
For a translated connection, the computer acts as a network address
translator; an IP router that translates addresses for packets being
forwarded between LAN hosts and Internet hosts. Translated connections
require less knowledge of IP addressing and routing and provide a simplified
configuration for LAN hosts and the ICS router.

The Network Address Translation (NAT) routing protocol is designed to
provide maximum flexibility to provide a translated connection to Internet.
Network address translation requires more configuration steps; however, each
step of the configuration is customizable. The NAT protocol allows for
ranges of IP addresses from ISP and the configuration of the range of IP
addresses allocated to LAN hosts.

IMHO, you should still buy a router. Personally, I have installed the
Netgear Gateway Router. The router is capable of masquerading as the MAC
address of any of the NIC cards on your LAN. Just like a computer, the
router obtains a DHCP lease from your ISP, and also acts as the DNS server
for all your LAN hosts.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [cc] RE: ADSL UK

As received from a friend this morning.
"I forgot to mention earlier - Joss has the USB version of ADSL (the 39.95
version) now and I configured it to route between the internet and his LAN.
His box is running Win 2K, but the method should work just as well under Win
98. If you decide to go for it, I can configure it so we can all go out on
the same connection."

May be of particular interest for LAN gaming caf.
If any of you out there are already doing this in the UK I would be
interested to hear more.

More information will be forthcoming as I receive it.

Cheers
