Have you checked the hardware in the Gateway you were investigating against it?  It's been some time since I encountered any hardware I couldn't get to work under Linux.

A good source of info about the details of various attempted attacks is:

http://whitehats.com/ids/

where you can search on the port number used.  In this case it didn't show an attack that uses this port as standard.
