Printers in an Internet Cafe

This is a guide, based on my 12 sites, on how to install a printer in an
Internet Cafe. You may disagree with me and if you do say so as any
discussions/comments may help other people on this list.

Option 1 - Manual Switch Box

It is possible to buy a switch box for either 2 or 4 computers that will
enable you to share a single printer. Good point - cheap solution (2 port
switch here costs about $6). Bad point - requires the customer to switch.

Option 2 - Automatic Switch

You can purchase automatic switches for either 2 or 4 computers. They are
more expensive than manual switches but work ok.

REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE A PHYSICAL CABLE LENGTH PROBLEM OF 5 METRES. YOU CAN
RUN LONGER CABLES BUT IT MAY NOT ALWAYS WORK (from my experience)

Option 3 - Workstation used as a print server

You can configure a computer to act as a print server using Win 98
networking. Against - computer down, no printing.

Option 4 - Dedicated Printer Server

Here use Win 98 networking with a spare computer (does not need to be
fast). Good use for a computer that is slow/old.

Option 5 - Network Printer Box

This allows you to connect a printer to the network. The box needs an IP
address and you need to configure all the computers on the network. I paid
$75 for my single port box therefore this is a cheap solution and so far
very reliable.

Option 6 - Printer With Network Card

This is the only solution I have not tried. My view is that the network
card option for a printer is the only solution I have not tried.

Option 7 - No Printer

Printers are a pain in the @#$%. After 27 years in the computer business I
still hate them. They are prone to failure due to paper being inserted
correctly, damp, no ink etc. If you have a site where the staff have little
knowledge or interest in the computer DO NOT install a printer.

In my business I am currently using several of the options mentioned above.
Think what is best for your business.
