Derek,

I'm afraid you're off base here. The argument/discussion has to do with how
matters concerning cybercafes should be handled on this list; and I think
that's relevant to this list.

Like Chris, I was very active on BBS networks before the Internet took over;
and this kind of discussion often arose when a newbie joined a forum and
SHOUTED IN CAPS, used profanity, or failed to use his <cut> or <snip> tools
to keep the message sizes down.

Whether or not netiquette is necessary today, on Internet lists, I'm not
sure. I'm also unsure whether manners of any kind are really necessary. To
use an analogy, I DO know that I wouldn't want to have dinner with a loud
mouth bore who monopolizes the conversation, talks with his mouth full and
releases frequent loud belches. But that's my take on the importance of
etiquette.

I also favor freedom of expression. However, one would hope that in a
public forum that that freedom would be exercised with some regard for the
generally accepted norms of social behavior. Unless the forum is moderated,
and the moderator sets the rules, those norms need to be established by the
participants. That can only be done through discussion, and perhaps
argument, like the exchange we've been following.
