Poll shows Texans favor gun curbs

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Most Texans, including those who own guns, favor some new
gun-control measures, putting them at odds with Texas governor and Republican
presidential candidate George W. Bush, according to a poll published on Friday.
Contrary to the Lone Star state's Wild West image, 75 percent of all Texans and 66
percent of gun owners favor registration of all handguns, according to the Scripps
Howard Texas Poll published by the Houston Chronicle.

A law requiring built-in trigger locks on all guns sold would be supported by 74
percent of Texans and 63 percent of gun owners while 63 percent of Texans and 52
percent of gun owners would back a law limiting handgun purchases to one a month per
person.

Asked if they generally favor new restrictions on gun sales, 46 percent of Texans and
33 percent of gun owners said they did.

Bush has said vigorous enforcement of existing laws, rather than introduction of new
gun-control measures, is the best way to counter gun violence, a position which has
aligned him closely with the National Rifle Association.

The telephone poll of 1,000 adults found that 48 percent of all households in Texas
own guns and that the state's law allowing private citizens to carry a concealed
handgun is supported by 62 percent of Texans and 77 percent of gun owners.
