Firing warning shots illegal
A Perth man may be charged for firing warning shots at
intruders after lying in wait at his business, which had
been robbed three times in as many days.

        And you commented:
"This sends a crystal clear message to people, if you defend
your property, don't tell the police - they'll send you to court
for it."

Allow me to add, that justice is supposed to be
about getting to the bottom of things, not creating fathomless
and unanswerable questions about what the reasons were for
the cause of a death, or for that matter, why someone just
suddenly disappeared.

Perhaps the police in Australia are looking for a few
good mysteries to dig into? They might get a whole bunch of
them, it they persist in their current modus.

And, while I certainly don't entice others to engage
in deception while in defence of their lives (and property), it
occurs to me that it might happen anyway, especially if they
view their own lives as being valued less than a criminal's, in
light of the current circumstances. When a criminal can enter
upon the premises of another to engage in crime, and be fairly
comforted by the fact that even if they murder their mark, they
will be out and about the land in short order, then whose life is
seen as worth more by the law court, and the government?

The police in WA basically suffer from extreme anti-gun phobia,
Western Australia has had tougher gun laws than most of Australia
since the 1920s, although they do issue handgun licenses for
occupational reasons, essentially to ranchers in the north of
the State. Up until the mid-80s, only WA, Victoria and the
capital terrority had licensing for long guns amounting to
anything, and I think Victoria only introduced it for long guns
in the late sixties.
