The American Cynic

*** If this is the 21st Century, I don't want to be a part of it:

Suppose you get an unsolicited fax purporting to be a "survey" about
gun control laws. You fill it out, ready to send it back for tallying.
That's when you see that you have to fax it back to a 900 number
charging $2.95 per minute. Do you do it?

If you're a Cynic reader and you said yes, I want you to unsubscribe
this afternoon.

It's amazing that a company would attempt to make money this way,
but what's even more astounding is that they do! It's 21st Century
Faxes, a British firm with an office in New York. What they do
(sending unsolicited broadcast faxes) is illegal in America; but since
they fax from London, they are immune to our FCC laws. In the wake
of the Columbine High School shootings, a gun control "survey" was
sent to over 6 million U.S. fax machines. Returned surveys would cost
the hapless boob between $3 and $6 -- "a small price to pay for
greater democracy," the survey's fine print says.

How many people would actually fall for this moneymaking scam? A
dozen? A few hundred? No, this is America! Over 97,000 knuckleheads
responded.

The company's director, Tony Moore, states that the purpose of this
survey is not "just to make money." "A lot of people from Britain visit
the U.S., and we don't want to be shot. Virtually everyone you run
across in America is packing a gun." We don't know about that, Tony,
but there certainly are 97,000 of us not packing a clue.

I hate this company, they constantly send me rubbish despite
my constant complaints and their clear violation of the
Data Protection Act.
