Thief Picks Wrong Day to Rob Bus Passengers
RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A Brazilian thief could not
have picked a worse day to try and rob passengers on a
Rio de Janeiro bus.

After snatching more than $800, Jose Roberto Rocha
jumped off the bus right in front of 410 police gathered
in a square for an official ceremony with the Rio
governor, police said on Friday.

The commanding general of the military police himself
abandoned the podium to pursue Rocha. Dozens of officers
chased the thief on foot and captured him after a shootout
and his failed attempt to escape on another bus.

``It was certainly bad luck,'' a police spokesman told
Reuters.

Rio is notorious for its soaring crime rates and robbers
often prey on bus passengers.

Last month, a gunman held six people hostage aboard a bus
for hours as television viewers across the nation looked
on. The gunman and one of his hostages were killed in a
botched police rescue.
