We had this argument recently on one of US lists and the conclusion was
that whilst 7.62NATO and 308 Winchester may be identical dimensionally,
the commercial loadings (308Win) are to a higher pressure and some
military actions might be damaged by firing them. Not damaged as in
"blown up" but subjected to higher rate of wear, cracks in metal etc.
