Another famous actor who joined up was Clark Gable, who was a major in the
USAAF and based at Polebrook, Northants. He was an air gunner in B17's and
bomber crews disliked flying with him because he was known to drink heavily
during missions and it was a difficult task to try and persuade a Major to
let someone else be rear gunner when he was incapable. There were others who
are probably less well known now such as Montgomery Clift who also saw
active service although many from Hollywood joined up the top brass liked
them to do morale boosting stuff rather than get shot at. Noel Coward is a
good example of a British Actor who served in the army.
