Police marksmen shot ex-soldier dead, inquest told
A former soldier was shot and killed by police marksmen
after he had aimed an airgun at six officers, an inquest
has heard.
Antony Kitts, 20, died an hour-and-a-half after the
incident in Falmouth, Cornwall on April 10 last year.
The inquest at Truro heard that Kitts had aimed at six
different police officers with what they believed was a
gun, and later turned out to be an air weapon.
PC Ian Hilton, of Devon and Cornwall police, said that
around 3.30am Kitts stood within 20 metres of two armed
marksmen at a roundabout on the edge of Falmouth and
aimed his weapon at them.
PC Hilton heard two shots fired and unemployed Kitts,
of Old Hill Crescent in Falmouth, fell to the ground. He
told the court he was in a marked patrol car at 2am with
two other officers when he first noticed Kitts walking
along with what he thought was a snooker cue up his
sleeve.
One of the other officers got out of the car to talk to
him and Kitts then aimed at the officers with what PC
Hilton said looked like a gun.
"He was commanding and aggressive towards us," said Pc
Hilton. "I was concerned for mine and my colleagues'
safety. He was shouting comments while pointing the gun
at us."
Kitts, the father of a 10-week-old son, was placed in
an ambulance but was later pronounced dead at the Royal
Cornwall Hospital, at Trelisk, Truro.
PC Hilton said Kitts's actions that night had appeared
well-rehearsed. He seemed very knowledgeable about
gun-handling and moving with a weapon, he said.
