Relatives were today continuing to comfort a
nine-year-old boy who watched helplessly as his father
was gunned down by a man wearing a mask from cult
horror film Scream.

Paul Rogers, 27, died from a single gunshot wound to
the stomach after two men burst into his Liverpool home
shortly before 11pm on Saturday.

Detectives heading the murder hunt are now hoping the
victim's schoolboy son, Josh, can provide clues to help
them catch his father's killer.

Det Supt Bill Morris, of Merseyside Police, said: "In
some respects he is very switched on and has been able
to provide us with good detailed descriptions of what
these two intruders were wearing.

"Last night young Josh was interviewed by specially
trained officers. He is obviously quite a resilient
young nine-year-old. He is very bright and very
intelligent.

"He is from a caring family who are concerned about the
trauma he's been exposed to over the last 24 hours," added
the policeman.

Det Supt Morris said Mr Rogers, who is estranged from
Josh's mother, was watching television with his son when
the two men barged into his second-floor flat in Catharine
Street, close to Liverpool city centre.

An "altercation" broke out when they demanded money and
even when cash was handed over this spilled out into the
hall. One of the men had already left the flat when his
accomplice pulled out a handgun, firing a single and fatal
shot.

Detectives said Mr Rogers, who looked after his son at
weekends, managed to stumble back to the lounge where he
collapsed on the floor in front of a terrified Josh.

The youngster was "mindful enough" to use his father's
mobile phone to contact a neighbour, who instructed the
schoolboy to call for an ambulance.

Police said Mr Rogers, who was unemployed and had
lived in the area for several years, was unconscious by
the time paramedics arrived at his home. He died a short
time later at the Royal Liverpool University hospital.

Det Supt Morris insisted officers were keeping an open
mind as to the motive for the "cold and callous" killing
of the popular father who had a keen interest in computer
games.

"There will be a history as to why this has happened.
Our inquiries are looking into Mr Rogers' background and
what has happened in the past. Has he upset somebody?" he
added.

"We have had some intelligence that he was involved in
very, very minor dealing in cannabis but he was not a
major player on the cannabis scene.

"If anything he was supplying to people in the locality."

The killer is described as around 5ft 10in tall, wearing
Kicker shoes, black baggy Adidas tracksuit bottoms, a
thick black padded jacket and black leather gloves.

The gun itself was described as black and possibly
fitted with a silencer.

His accomplice was between 5ft 8in and 5ft 9in tall
and wearing a dark coloured jacket which concealed
his face, Kicker trainers, black tracksuit
bottoms and black leather gloves.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the
incident room on 0151 777 8681.

Probably not a shotgun then.
