By Terry Pendrous,
My thoughts and feelings about being forced
to adopt Metrication by a large crowd of self seeking idiots are pretty well
known. I resent it, and oppose it totally. However, as for metrication
itself, well like all systems, it has its good points as well as bad. What
has prompted this missive is a discussion/arguement about its adoption etc
etc. One of the guys I have been discussing this with, said in fact the
Americans were using it on their designed small arms as early as 1919, i.e.
The Thompson Sub Machine Gun,
invented by an old war horse, the venerable General John T Thompson US Army,
Retd. Now I found!! find this difficult to take in.
I was told that the Barrel/Receiver thread was a metric square thread and
the Compensator at the other end UNF!! Now why would the above gentleman
have two different systems installed on something he designed early last
Century, when Imperial measurements were the norm in the US. It doesn't make
sense to me. The risk for a mistake must be increased considerably. Do not
get me wrong, I am not saying it wasn't designed like that, or for that
matter the best for that particular part, for I personally do not know. I am
open for education. Have any of the list any info on this? and a mix of
Imperial/Metric on other kit, for it sounds like this metrication agenda was
started much earlier than I first thought.

Bear in mind that US and Imperial measurements are two entirely seperate
things. The US length measurements are very close to Imperial measurements
but they are slightly different. US volume measurements are usually
a great deal different even though they have the same name. In the US
they often call it the 'Roman' system of measurement. I'm not clear
on the reason for the differences, possibly Webster and in his attempt
to rid the US of any "colonial" influences.
This is why I like the metric system because people generally agree
on what the actual measurement is when it is defined metrically.
Steve.
