RAIL GANG'S GUN TERROR
A GUN gang on a Liverpool railway line shot two men and
peppered houses with pellets.

The youths struck from bridges on the West Coast Main Line
link through Mossley Hill just before midnight.

The police helicopter was launched as Merseyside and
British Transport police officers searched the area.

A 39-year-old cyclist was shot in the stomach as he rode
along Smithdown Road. He was detained in hospital and
may need surgery today.

Fifteen minutes later ECHO reporter Andrew Campbell was
shot by five youths he saw in Stalbridge Road.

Campbell was released from the Royal Liverpool University
Hospital early this morning.

Warned

Today Campbell, 33, who lives nearby and as wounded in
his right shoulder, said he was attacked after he warned
the gang about the dangers of playing on railway tracks
and told them to move off the bridge.

Two other men who came to his help were also fired at as
they tried to call the police and houses in the area were
peppered with the pellets.

Campbell said: "I had been to get a takeaway and was
walking home when I heard the youths on the bridge.

"Yesterday I had been to cover the funeral of a little girl
who died after being electrocuted on railway lines last
week, so with the words of the priest ringing in my ears I
decided to say something to them.

"I told them it was dangerous to play up there and asked
them to get off, but they ignored me.

"When I walked away I was shot.
