BBC TV Sunday 21.50 (A Fair Cop)

Did any Cybershooter see the excellent documentary last night on BBC2. It
was set in Liverpool and dealt with a crime lord Curtis Warren who wanted to
flood Liverpool with drugs and firearms and granades. The series followed
the Merseyside Police Force and Chief Inspector Elmore Davies who was
arrested and charged with corruption, he eventually received a 5 year jail
sentence. The program reported that Warren set up shop in Holland and was
running his empire from there but unaware that his phone was tapped by the
Dutch Police. Unable to understand the Scouse accent they asked for two
officers from Liverpool to fly over and translate for them. They were told
that anything that they heard was not to be repeated under Dutch Law. They
heard on one of the telephone taps the name of Elmore Davies and quickly
told their bosses back in England and breaking Dutch law by doing so. The
Dutch Police called them arrogant and unprofessional. Mersey Police set up a
sting to catch Elmore and his merry men, led by a mystery man Det. Ins. Phil
Jones who nobody seemed to know. Warren wanted to bribe Elmore into getting
rid of a gun that was in Police custody that was used in a shooting a few
weeks before. Philip Glenning Jr. had allegedly fired the handgun outside a
club in Liverpool, two Police officers who were near by said they heard a
shot and gave chase to Glenning. One officer hot on his heals said that the
gunman turned and fired a shot at him, he over powered the gunman and he was
arrested. The Police Officer was hailed as a hero. To get Elmore, the higher
arc. bugged his office and home, this went on for weeks. Later it was found
out that the gun in question, a deactivated Colt, and had a bullet stuck up
the spout and was impossible to have fired at anyone, the Police Office
lied. The Police officer was a bit on the suspect side himself being caught
on security camera with his "bit on the side" who was buying him a up market
stereo with a dud cheque which he vouched for. The security tape was never
shown in court, and he lied to senior officers from start to finish about
the whole affair. There was a lot of reconstruction and suspicion of "stitch
up" .

The program was very interesting it showed how the Police can "bend" the
rules and "stitch" up people when and where it suited them. Certain evidence
was never shown in court, and probably never will be.

As for myself I only have contempt for the Police if they cannot get a
conviction without lying or stitching people up then why bother. I went to
see my 4th Lawyer regarding my case and was told that although there was
nothing he would rather do in taking my local force to court as in his
opinion "they were incapable of telling the truth" it would be a waste of
time. The evidence I have was good but we would be dealing with an
organisation who stick together and I should just get on with my life. I
will never believe in the Police again.

At the end of the program it stated that Police corruption in Merseyside is
sill being investigated, and that British organised crime is now worth
billions, and in Liverpool there were nearly 300 cases relating to firearms
and violence in the last 12 months has also risen and somebody is murdered
every two weeks,

Graham
