Robbery charge
A MAN was due to appear before North Tyneside
magistrates today accused of carrying out an armed raid.
Philip Wright, 32, of St Paul's Close, Ashington, is
charged with conducting an armed robbery at the Tait Art
Gallery in Tynemouth Road, Howdon, on August 14.
During the raid a masked man armed with a Luger-style
handgun threatened to shoot owner Kenneth Marshall before
grabbing cash from the till.
Former soldier Mr Marshall managed to slip out of the
shop and locked the door behind him in an attempt to trap
the robber, but the raider kicked out glass door panels to
escape. The raid cost the shop about L1,000.
