Ciminalising Guns
Letter sent To The Daily Telegraph

I was astonished by your reports and leading article on
the Notting Hill Carnival. It is quite clear that the
police are adopting double standards in relation to the
possession of weapons.

Law-abiding gun owners are constantly in the political
and police spotlight in an endeavour to make such ownership
increasingly difficult. The recent Home Affairs Select
Committee report recommended even tighter restrictions on
the ownership of guns, with the undoubted objective of
progressively ensuring that no law-abiding member of the
public could own them. The soft targets would then be
eliminated.

We now learn that criminals with illegally held guns
can carry them, unchallenged and with full police
knowledge. This makes a mockery of the campaign being
waged against legally held guns by politicians, police and
other anti-gun campaigners.

Police will not confront someone on the street suspected
of carrying a gun, but are ready to confront and arrest,
with the help of their armed colleagues, any recreational
shooter pursuing his lawful sport, whose activity has been
reported to them by a member of the public. When will the
Government face up to the inescapable reality that it is
not guns that are dangerous, but the criminals who carry
them?
